The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
